Ellen DeGeneres menangis mendapat medali kehormatan dari Presiden Obama

Selasa, 22 November, jadi hari yang bersejarah untuk 21 warga sipil Amerika yang terpilih. Barack Obama memberikan penghargaan tertinggi bagi warga sipil untuk terakhir kalinya sebagai Presiden AS.

Presidential Medal of Freedom diberikan Obama dalam upacara di Gedung Putih kepada mereka yang telah berkontribusi pada kepentingan dan keamanan negara, perdamaian dunia, budaya, atau karya besar publik dan swasta lainnya.

Ellen DeGeneres menjadi salah satu warga AS yang mendapatkan penghargaan ini atas perannya mendorong gerakan hak-hak kaum LGBT.

“Sekarang, sangat mudah untuk melupakan, ketika kita sudah bergerak begitu jauh, seberapa besar keberanian yang diperlukan Ellen untuk melela (mengungkapkan diri) sebagai gay di selama hampir 20 tahun yang lalu,” kata Obama dalam upacara penyerahan penghargaan di Gedung Putih.

Selain Ellen, dari dunia hiburan ada Tom Hanks, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, Cicely Tyson, musisi Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, penyiar Vin Scully, pengusaha Bill dan Melinda Gates,

Dari dunia olahraga ada mantan pebasket legendaris Kareem Abdul-Jabbar dan Michael Jordan.

Penghormatan anumerta juga diberikan untuk Elouise Cobell dan Grace Hopper, Richard Garwin, Frank Gehry, Margaret H. Hamilton, Maya Lin, Lorne Michaels, Newton Minow, dan Eduardo Padron.

Lucunya, Ellen sempat dilarang masuk ke Gedung Putih karena ia lupa membawa kartu identitas. Namun, setelah sempat duduk di luar selama 30 menit, ia akhirnya diperbolehkan masuk. Semuanya terbayarkan, rasa haru pun tidak bisa ia tahan saat itu.

Staf dan Presiden memerlukan waktu untuk mempertimbangkan tokoh-tokoh yang mandapatkan penghargaan ini. Namun, keputusan akhir tetap berada di tangan Presiden dan tidak dapat diganggu gugat.
